Regular life
Vincent was originally a member of the Turks, where he was assigned to protect Lucrecia Crescent, a scientist who was partially responsible for his father's -Grimoire Valentine- death. He eventually fell in love with Lucrecia, who ended up having an affair with Hojo, which led to the birth of Sephiroth. Vincent was outraged when he learned that Hojo planned to perform experiments on Lucrecia's unborn child, and when he confronted Hojo, he was shot in the stomach.
Experiments
After he was shot, Hojo performed experiments on Vincent's body in order to make his body stronger, and to give the ability to transform. Hojo believed the experiment to be a failure, as Vincent died during the experiments.
After his death, Lucrecia tried to bring him back to life by infusing his body with mako corrupted by Chaos. This was a success in that Vincent was returned to life, but also a failure in that he lost control of his body. This was fixed when Lucrecia inserted Protomateria into his body, allowing him to gain control of his own body.
After waking, he felt responsible for Lucrecia's illness. He locked himself in a coffin in the basement of the Shinra Mansion. He was awoken by Cloud when Cloud went off on his quest to destroy Sephiroth, whom he helped to save the world.
